This is a small portfolio site. It has no accounts, no login and no shop. This page says exactly what it records and how to stop it, in plain words.

Who is responsible

What the site records

Visitor numbers, and nothing else. When you open a page, the site notes:

• which page you opened, and how many seconds it was actually on your screen
• whether you have been here before, as a yes or no
• your city, region and country, worked out roughly from your connection
• whether you are on a phone, a tablet or a computer, and which browser
• the website that linked you here, if any

To count seconds honestly it only counts time the page was genuinely in front of you. Leave a tab open in the background and that time is not counted.

What it never records

No name, no email address, no phone number, no IP address, no precise location, and nothing at all about what you do on any other website. There is no advertising, no Google Analytics, no Meta pixel, and nothing is sold or shared with anybody.

The one thing stored on your device

A single small cookie called _bza. It holds a date and two numbers: when you first visited, how many separate days you have visited, and when you were last here. It contains no identifier. Two different people who first visited on the same day and have been back the same number of times would have identical cookies, and there is no way to tell them apart.

It exists so I can tell roughly how many people come back, rather than treating every visit as a stranger. It lasts two years unless you clear it, and it does nothing else. If you switch the counting off below, it is deleted.

Your IP address is used for a moment to work out your city and to produce a daily counting number, then discarded. Your IP itself is never stored. The counting number derived from it is stored, and I would rather say so than let you assume otherwise. It is scrambled with a key that changes every night and differs per site, so it cannot be matched to you on another day, or to you on any other site of mine, and it carries nothing that could contact you. It is what makes counting people possible at all rather than counting clicks. It is deleted with everything else after three days.

Why this is allowed, and your right to say no

The lawful basis is legitimate interest under section 11(1)(f) of POPIA: knowing which pages are useful is how I decide what to fix and what to remove. There is a written assessment behind that, and you can ask to see it.

You have the right to object under section 11(3), and if you do I must stop. There is no balancing test and no argument, it simply stops. The button below is that switch and it works immediately.

How long anything is kept

Three days. Individual page views, and the daily counting number above, are deleted after that. What survives is a daily total per page, which is a number and cannot be traced to anyone. Three days rather than longer because the nightly summary has already taken every figure I use by then, so keeping the detail beyond that would be holding something about you for no reason.

Where it is processed

The site and its counting run on Cloudflare, which processes outside South Africa. That is a cross border transfer under section 72 of POPIA, and it is covered by Cloudflare's data processing terms. No personal information leaves in a form that identifies anybody.

Your other rights

You can object to the counting, which the button above does. Because nothing here identifies you, there is no personal record of you to access, correct or delete. If you believe otherwise, email me and I will look.
